Yum. Try a soymilk steamer with a squirt of Torani flavored syrup in it. Delicious. Also, the atmosphere is pretty nice. I'm no coffee drinker, so I can't comment on the joe.

This is a big-city-type cafe that would normally attract hipsters galore. While you do have that clientele, there are also business people, locals, and general randos who frequent the place as well. Admittedly, if it's a busy morning it can be a bit too loud for my tastes. However. Four Words. Ham And Gruyere Croissant. This pastry can reduce me to a drooling, vacant-eyed zombie, it is so delicious. Crispy, salty, fatty, slightly sweet. It is perfect. The chocolate croissants are only lesser because, COME ON, Gruyere cheese. Some of the specials can be a bit pretentious, but it's worth it. A hidden jewel in the "Arts District" (Cough Cough) of Benton Harbor.

The Phoenix is a diamond in the rough. They brew Intelligentsia coffee, and I have never been disappointed. Their food is great, and the ingredients are fresh, and delicious. The huevos is one of my favorites.

Great breakfast, sandwiches, soups, and salads in a relaxing, cool atmosphere. Try the gruyere and ham baked into a croissant and a fresh squeezed juice. Intelligentsia coffee, too!

This place is in the art district of Benton Harbor. What a great location! A coffee shop in an up and coming block. They have great artwork hanging from the exposed brick walls. The coffee is great. As Thomas said its Intelligentsia from Chicago. I had a dark roast and another from El Salvador. The chai was good too. I highly recommend the fresh juices. They are made to order and a great healthy alternative. The food is fresh and its standard sandwich/ salad fare. I've been told the veggies have been grown locally. The staff is super nice and its got a great vibe. The music can be loud at times so you may want to bring headphones. Phoenix has potential as a future place for poetry or performances. The only down fall is the hours. They were closed at 2pm on a Saturday! WTH. Overall, this is just what Benton Harbor/St Joe needs.

I've really fallen in love with this place. The staff is welcoming and I always enjoy the brief conversations I get with them when I go in. Although prices aren't very low, I appreciate all of the local, organic, or natural ingredients.

Really cool place that we randomly walked into, while looking for breakfast in benton harbor. Friendly staff, good breakfast sandwiches, coffee, & great atmosphere. I got a smoothie that involved espresso, banana, chai, and almond milk..awesome flavor combo!

One of my absolute favorite restaurants in the area! It almost doesn't feel like a restaurant anymore than it does like home. The owner is so nice and friendly. And their food! Is delicious and so fresh! Not to mention their coffee.. I could drink their lattes everyday.

Very cute place, nice people, & good food and coffee! Free wifi-I'll come here to work or read in the future. Or it's a nice place to meet up with friends.

REALLY great food if you have more than an hour to eat it (which I never do since I'm usually on my lunch break) and have roughly $15 to spend on lunch. Wish the staff would learn that 90 % of their clientele is from local businesses that don't have all day to hang out and eat like the 10% that does. Also if the only way to get your food is by ordering it one at a time at the counter I don't think it is productive to stop in between people and make lattes while people are waiting just to put in an order. The food is great, we just think there's a much more efficient way of doing business to make it a place we would go to during a work day, especially for the price we are paying. With new competition at Bread+Bar where you can get full service, a sandwich (with a salad included in the 8.50 price), and with a check at the table in under 45 minutes I think The Phoenix should rethink how they are doing business.

Quite surprising little place. It's pretty much in nowheresville Benton Harbor but don't let that scare you. I had a caprese panini that was decent, could have been more meltee and a slamming chai tea with soy. Prices were appropriate for this part of town and considering I live in helLA I expected to pay much more. Workers were really genuinely nice. Would try again if I am ever in this part of town.

The Phoenix is wholesome, organic and natural foods served up in an ecclectic and homey atmosphere. Located in the Arts District in Benton Harbor, MI, this cozy and delightful spot offers gourmet quality breakfasts and lunches. Everything is so fresh and many ingredients grown locally in season. The omelets, croissant and soups are among my favorites. You can eat at a table by a large sunny window or move over to a couch or easy chair with your book or Ipad. Everyone on staff is just the friendliest and the whole environment is very laid-back. You will feel welcome as soon as you step in the door. Prices are moderate, but reasonable given the portion sizes and quality of ingredients and preparation. Try it out; you'll be back again and again!

This place is incredible. There is really no other coffee shop like this anywhere else in Southwest Michigan. The staff is super friendly and chill that it is hard to not keep coming back. Love the atmosphere as well. Plus the coffee is always kick ass and it is not just another Starbucks. Big Ups to the Phoenix

Love the Phoenix. Good coffee, vegetarian options, everything is made in house. Try the croissants for breakfast or lunch. The brownies don't appear often but they're great if you find them buy one! Good atmosphere, free wifi. Best restaurant within 20 miles.

What a great place for a soup and sandwich! All bread is baked on site, the soups are homemade, and the menu varied with offerings definitely not found at Panera - think yellow curry chicken salad on homemade ciabatta. All ingredients are fresh. Save room for a chocolate and toffee chip cookie - out of this world good. The staff is friendly and helpful. The dining area in a restored building space makes for a great atmosphere. Definitely worth a try. I only wish I had occasion to be in Benton Harbor more often.

Reliable and fast wifi. Add to that, amazing croissants and great coffee. You then have achieved a perfect mid work day stop off. Job well done Phoenix.

Great spot for lunch! Really good sandwiches. Very, very nice people. Laid back vibe. I got the hummus sandwich with Havarti and avocado and it was excellent. Somewhat light and healthy...My husband got a turkey sandwich and said it was very good as well. I also hear the green smoothies are excellent! The manager or owner came out after our food was served and made sure everything was ok -- very nice and not expected at a cafe.

I've only ever been treated rudely here. For the price, I'd rather go down the street to Mason Jar & be treated with kindness.

Hadn't been in a while and brunch a couple of Saturdays ago was spot on. The place was quiet on a rainy morning, which I like. Crowds at breakfast joints often keep me from going, as does the fact that I can cook eggs better to my liking at home. Boyfriend and I each had the huevos rancheros. Avocado slices and fresh cilantro garnished the black beans and two fried eggs. Corn tortillas on the plate seemed baked, not fried, which I appreciated. It all went down easy. Shared a cinnamon roll while we were waiting. Mmm. Coffee good. Clean, cozy atmosphere. I like the revival of the place. Will go back soon.

Nice low key place. BLT was good, though bacon could have been crisper. My wife got the Turkey, Bacon, and Avacado sandwich, which she liked. Only been the one time (lunch stop while driving to Grand Haven for vacation), but it is a nice place to grab a bite.

Excellent salmon on rye. Really! Great casual atmosphere and location. Not so good cappuccino. It was the type of bitter you get with a long extraction (or dirty equipment). It was not so bad that I did not finish my cup though. I'd definitely order another one next time and hope it improves.

Best. Croissant. EVER!! My husband and I stopped here while visiting family in Michigan. It was an attractive place, and the staff was very pleasant. I ordered a plain croissant with my morning coffee. Now, I've had handmade croissants, fresh-from-the-oven croissants, I've had frozen & baked croissants that tasted like the real thing. I've had croissants in a dozen Paris sidewalk cafes. But I've never had a croissant as wonderful as the one I got here. Buttery, crispy-flaky on the outside, tender and delicious on the inside, it was absolutely PERFECT, and heavenly to eat.

Great atmosphere but food is outrageously expensive. It used to include a small salad and the sandwich choices were good. No coffee refills but it has that coffee house vibe; go figure. No longer recommend

First time. Great healthy food, wonderful service. Reminds me of a great coffee shop in West Seattle. My wife and I Will be back.

Amazing spot for delicious "real food". In town for the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find this authentic local food choice. Had a black bean, egg, white cheddar, and cilantro wrap with iced coffee and a homemade raspberry and blueberry muffin. It was delicious! There was quite a line during brunch, which enticed me to go inside to check it out. There is free WIFI. The atmosphere has an urban/loft feel in an old building that has been restored. Definitely a must try!

Best coffee I've ever had! Fresh food with real ingredients made with great flavors and care. The people are nice and friendly. And the atmosphere is comfortable and laid back. Overall, great experience!

I love coming here for lunch when i am visiting my mom....we share a sandwich (undoubtedly an amazing concoction of acovado, bacon and splendor) and then head next for gelatto. These two business should just knock the door down in between them and make it easier to connect the dots. Love that Benton Harbor has such nice businesses to offer, love the staf, love the food...thanks Phoenix!

I came here with a local on a Saturday and sampled their breakfast offerings, all which were posted on a large chalkboard at the counter. There were perhaps seven or egg choices of egg sandwiches, quiche, a lox 'n bagel schmear, and omelets. Nice limited choices at prices you would expect. I understand that The Phoenix boasts a local/sustainable aesthetic. It's location in a new Arts District of Benton Harbor's somewhat lonely and forlorn downtown is a nice draw.Their are other shops like a funky gelato parlor and a bonafide glass-blowing factory, and other art galleries nearby. Easy and free parking, too. The space itself is very bright, modern and open with lots of tables and a tall ceiling. The staff is friendly. Service is that hybrid you order the counter and they deliver type. Our orders arrived rather quickly. We both had the egg sanwiches, with different toppings. The bread and ingredients were fresh and cooked just right. Not too dry like those breakfast sandwiches can be. On this Saturday, we were thinking of lunch, arriving around 12:30 P.M., but only breakfast was available unitl 2PM. So you may want to call ahead if you're looking for lunch. Intelligentsia coffee makes it worth my while to travel a bit, at least from Harbor Country. But definiteley come sample the great java, the fresh grub, and check out the galleries here, too.

First time in town and to this venue. Pretty impressed by the variety of food offered and the coffee tasted great. Atmosphere was laid back and the staff was friendly. I'd recommend this to anyone I know.

Awesome ambient atmosphere. A trendy, relaxed, coffee shop cafe, this place was a fun little find on a road trip through Michigan. If I lived in the area, I would totally get coffee or tea and sprawl out on a couch or table and work on a computer or read a book. It's a really neat place. I think I had the house salad with freshly spiced pepitas. It was vegetarian with lots of tasty greens, and very different than your traditional salads, which I appreciated. Would visit again!

Consistently delicious food created by talented, passionate people. You walk in the door in the morning and are greeted by a case of gorgeous pastries that taste as good as they look - they are all made in house by scratch. The coffee is top of the line. The atmosphere is relaxing, with local art on display and big comfy chairs that are there if you'd like. Lunch is a good mix of classic sandwiches with high quality ingredients and other creative offerings - it is all good! Saturday morning breakfast here is one of my favorites - particularly their version of huevos. Enjoy!

Sad I didn't find this place sooner. From what I understand they try to serve local ingredients and I have not been disappointed in their food... or coffee. My first meal was a tuna melt - yum! Next i tried a special of the day which was beans and rice essentially - it came with avocado, tomato, etc, It was just okay, but I won't hold it against them. I love that they use old jelly glasses for water. You serve yourself. You order at the counter and sometimes the line doesn't move very quickly and the food certainly takes its time getting to you, but that seems to go with the whole slow food vibe - ha. We were there for four hours one day b/c we were kicked out of work and they never once bugged us as we used their wifi on our $2 coffees until lunch. Great add to Benton Harbor.

We almost skipped this place because we were looking for dinner and most of the reviews were more breakfast-y. In fact, the restaurant is listed as being closed for dinner, but it was open and the sign on the door listed closing time as 9:00. That would have been a big mistake because we had a great experience. I had the beet and goat cheese salad with butternut squash soup which was delicious. My husband had the brisket sandwich special, which also was very tasty (I may have had a bite or two). Our server was friendly and attentive and the restaurant was very nice.
